Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Are definitely not the same thing.  How can you explain then the amount of patents per capita Finland gets with the relative lack of entrepreneurship?  Maybe the risks are too great, the state will keep you comfortable, and even if you hit it big you will not reap the rewards of your efforts.  I know Tekes is doing a lot for the technology sector, but I wonder how effective it is given the overall structure of society.

Not that Latin American countries do any better, especially with their problems of monopolies choking innovation and competitiveness.

Two unrelated stories on immigration in Europe

  1. The European Commission has unveiled a plan to copy the American "green card" scheme to attracked skilled immigrants to Europe.  While it sounds interesting, I would really like to know what it means in practice, since as we know in the end the individual member states decide how to apply the Commission directives.  It would be a good idea, but I'm still sceptic as it could encounter too much opposition from anti-immigration politicians, even if of course business leaders clamour for it.  Question number two is how would a plan like that affect the naturalisation of said foreign citizens.  People worrying from a brain drain should see what happened with India and China: their people left mostly for the U.S. and came back with experience and capital to improve their original communities.
  2. A video was released of a Spanish man attacking an Ecuadorian immigrant in Barcelona because "she was an immigrant".  Thankfully this man is now under prosecution.  I started wondering how many of these attacks go unpunished. (via Alt1040)

The problem of interoperability

Bought an Apple AirPort Express to connect my laptop with my stereo to listen music and at the same time be able to browse the web.  Since I have a Fonera router for using my network and sharing it with others (not that anybody has actually connected as I live in the middle of nowhere), I thought it would be easy to have them talk to each other and to my PC… how wrong I was!

After 3 hours of fiddling with the different settings I got it all working and now I'm happy listening to music without any wires in the way.  However, it got me wondering about the good old problem of interoperability.  Even when following the same standards, it is ridiculous things wouldn't work because of an arcane problem between WPA/WPA2 implementations in the two routers.  I guess there is still plenty of work to be done.

FIFA date wrap-up

Finland 0-0 Spain

Finland has almost performed seppuku, with its hopes to qualify to the Euro 2008 needing nothing short of a miracle. Two goals were ruled out for offside, one correctly, the other not.

Mexico 2-2 Nigeria

The senior team played against the Africans in Ciudad Juárez, and after going down 1-0, they ended up tying 2-2. A very interesting game.

Finland 0-0 Spain

In the commemoration of the centennary of the Finnish Football Association, both teams played a rather passive game in rather cold conditions. Nothing to play for and Finland’s 4th 0-0 tie in a row.

Mexico 2-3 Guatemala

A wrestling rather than a football match, with 2 players per side sent off, and the under-23’s giving a not-so-nice year end’s present to Hugo Sánchez, Mexico coach.

Social Networks of all sizes and purposes

Was reading the Groundswell blog and found a series of different online communities for all sorts of different purposes.  One that definitely caught my eye was Design your portion of the border fence, where people are invited to submit designs for graffitti that would be placed on the American or Mexican sides of the barrier the U.S. government is building between the U.S. and Mexico.

Definitely a creative way to raise awareness of a current issue.
